Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States. Nicknamed “Old Hickory” because of his tough and aggressive personality, Jackson got a little more than he bargained for during his inauguration party. He was the first (and probably only) president to ever invite the public to the White House ball honoring his inauguration. The attendees included both wealthy politicians and poor citizens wearing homemade clothes.
The crowd became so large and unruly that White House security couldn’t contain it. Dishes and decorative pieces were broken, and people even stood on good furniture in muddy shoes just to get a look at the new Commander-in-Chief! Finally, the White House attendants got smart. They put large tubs of liquored punch outside on the lawn to lure all the people outside. Because of this crazy scene, Jackson earned a new nickname…”King Mob.” Something tells me they didn't make that same mistake again!
